Posted this addon on official community discord server of Touhou 12.3.
Here are all the comments that accumulated in few days:
"Massacre on Mt.Ooe damage seems too low, DnD equivalents already trigger without the risk of missing, can't it be like a 12d12 or higher damage?" someone else said to that "it could probably get a huge boost to damage and frequency if it didn't cause indefinite stun"
"lol whiplash for the bard having an almost useless lvl3 feature and an exceedingly busted lvl6, oh right, this is 5.5, so animate objects doesn't just instantly delete an encounter, still probably too strong a lvl6" Maybe this guy is right buuuuuut I think it's alright for bard to be able to do some impact via summons. Like making a large piece of wall alive to protect the party from some bullethell.
That's all that I've got in past 3 days. I still have something to tell though.
My DM said that he really liked the idea of patchouli wizard subclass. DnD surely lacks specialization of this kind.
On the side note, I think that Touhou fighting games offer some interesting ideas. For example, been able to use melee attacks and cantrips in battle. Just like in something like Touhou 12.3, where characters can use some ranged cantrip like magic that recharges in about 6 seconds (the time of the round).
While talking about figthing games, I think it would be great to add more martials to the subclasses, because fighter don't even has one! Although I understand the sheer weakness of all martials in DnD, especially in high magic setting like Touhou where everybody can fly. Yet, I think adding more melee related subclasses could be funny. Where the subclass itself will give ranged attacks. For example, Meiling (The China girl) from Touhou 12.3 where her kicks make rainbow ranged attacks. Would love to see her in this addon as an Asian monk subclass.
Additionally, magic item suggestion. An air purifying orb (The one moon rabbit lost in Touhou 19 story). This magic items can help Pure Land origin feat to stay longer on moon rabbits or lunarians while in non-pure lands. It can have variety of rarities where common orb can barely make you pure, while uncommon or rare has some other benefits. Like purifying poison gas in a dungeon of Touhou 13 (Due to many dead bodies producing corpse gas). That could be funny. I think something like this is a requirement for those fellas to even attend in parties of adventurers.
Got an idea for a fighter subclass, throwing knifes subclass. The fighters ability to do many actions would probably be cool in terms of throwing a bazzilion knifes into the enemy, could probably also give him misty step or other ability for teleportation for it to look like time manipulation. I thought to myself potential ideas for fighter subclass from Touhou, but all possible martials there are either alcoholics oni or Asian monks. Sakuya seems like the only exception to this rule. Maybe there is more, but I haven't though about it enough I guess.
Also, Touhou is an interesting place where you can encounter God's on everyday basis. Would be interested to see if players could play lesser gods. Or to the very least to have some idea how to write God's NPCs if you are a DM.
I've shared this addon on Touhou forums of Moriya Shrine, and someone have given their own opinion. For example, Kqys9xTK9a5a says:
"I've been using this addon and it's awesome! For suggestions, maybe fine-tune some class abilities for balance. How about that Bard getting some unique performance features?"
(I can't reply to the messages for some reasons, thus, I will just post this way)
Discord server would be very convenient. Even if it won't be big, it sure will be fun.
I did hear that new Artificer have some legal issues. Keep forgetting.
Seija items are very interesting considering it might be hard to implement in DnD world. For example, Gap Youkai Umbrella. How are you going to cross the screen in DnD? Cross to the other side of the map on the table? Walk through solid walls? Just teleport as a bonus action? It sure will be tricky.
I think the hardest thing will be to create spell cards for each character. It would require to know how every single spell in the entire game works! As well as balancing been wacky. It's quite hard to fit all Touhou 6 characters in 1 short campaign due to characters leveling up very slow. Thus, leaving 7th level party fighting CR 27 Flandre. Whilst you can encounter those characters out of specific conditions because DnD is an open world game. The spell card rules might help with this. Considering they are made to equal everybody. Maybe implementing more of those would be an interesting idea. Considering that the rules of spell card battles is quite unclear in the addon. I might have hard time explaining them to my friends who are unfamiliar with Touhou.
Aside from all else. I think the best thing I can only suggest is some sort of the map for players to navigate in the world. There aren't many good maps, maybe making our own would be an interesting idea. Considering that's what I am currently struggling the most with preparing for my future campaign. Currently trying to figure out the map for my oneshot because it is quite unclear what's in the way from Moriya shrine to the Hakurei shrine.
I will probably finalize my campaign based on this addon, maybe throw in some homebrew items and then I will probably send it to you with notes of what my players did. Maybe it will help you make your own adventure to go with the addon. Although I don't say that you have to. After all, seems like you don't have many hands to work on this masterpiece.
Well anyway good luck with developing 1.2V, take your time.
Considering how slow my table is in finishing current campaign. I think I can wait about half a year. Maybe more. Take as much time as you can to polish the upcoming masterpiece. This addon already goes in hand of "Touhou D20" for DnD 3.5e if not already been better.
I will note this, I don’t really know if I will be able to make a good map. Maybe a hex-based worldmap, or a more symbolic map that shows main locations and connections between them + how long it may take to move (I was thinking something like map from Mystia Izakaya).
About spell cards, I am not quite sure if my current implementation is good or not (they are mostly “cosmetic” for players without optional rule, more of a detriment to players with optional rules, and are practically custom spell for NPCs), but I hope it may help for balancing somewhat somewhat, since NPCs automatically lose the battle if they spend all their spell cards, and DM can, in theory, limit amount of spellcards (like exclude more powerful ones) to make an fight against high CR enemy possible (story-wise, high CR enemy may go a bit easier on player’s character, and while not truly defeated, must admit defeat because spell cards are defined in advance). I plan making all bestiary characters have amount of spellcards loosely tied to their in-game difficulty.
Also, if my Spell Card battles is confusing, I may try to reword it? Story-wise, it’s a bit vague in canon too, but the way I tried applying it to gameplay may leave confusion, since player and NPC Spell Cards are practically separate gameplay mechanics.
About discord - I will probably make one in some time (though it will be extremely empty, especially at first), but I think I will also enable forum-like community posts on Itch too. The only issue is that your current comments on this page will likely disappear, since community forums replace comments.
Map from Mystia Izakaya is very nice indeed, yet there aren't every single location. Implementing those might become an issue (not a big one though). Mystia Izakaya itself seems like an interesting random event to occur during travels at night. For that there must be a reason to adventure in night aside from battling Youkai in their prime time. This Izakaya might have a small chance to be encountered, will provide good food for the cost similar to the fan-game. This food and booze will provide some cool buffs to the players.
I think there is good bunch of things you can add from the fan sphere of Touhou. There are heaps of content out there. Ranging from food preferences of named characters to certain apples looking suspiciously bad!!
Very well written addon for DnD! I love it so much! And I needed it exactly in the time of release! Just got invited for DMing for a small table. I was nervous to what campaign to choose, therefore I decided to just base it off something I already know well and good (which is Touhou). Came up with a 6th level oneshot idea of transporting some booze from Moriya Shrine to Hakurei Shrine. With some encounters of Youkai, fairies and constructs. Maybe even some named characters like 3 fairies of light.
Once I finishing DMing that campaign based on this addon, I would like to leave a better review. If there is any sort of Discord server I could join to tell my progress/feedback and potentially even suggest some ideas, then I would be very happy to join!
My main feedback which I was able to to gather just from reading:
I would suggest adding more subclasses to classes that lack them. For example, artificer could surely get something funny like it's own version of Gensokyo Alchemist. Which main gimick is to brew alcohol! (which seems to be a very used item in this addon)
Another artificer subclass could be maybe a kappa engineer. Who's main gimick is to make different sorts of Kappa contraptions similar to Armorer and Artillerist.
Additionally, another interesting artificer subclass would be Spell-Card forger. Who can make spellcards similar to the one seen in Touhou 18.
(As can be seen, I am a big artificer fan)
Moving on from subclasses to magic items.
I am sure that there is plentiful of magic items that can be pulled from Touhou. However, I think it would be cool to add Seija cheat items from Touhou 14.3, preferable not making them an artifact magic items you can't craft in normal conditions! Considering lack of armor, it would be interesting to use nimble fabric to enhance your dodging capabilities. Considering magic items lack of charges, they make amazing fuel for player spell cards.
Between incidents, there is significant time jumps that can be used for magic item creation and other sort of interactions with the world. Which I am very interested to explore.
On enemies to add, I think it would be nice to finish all Touhou 6 characters. (If my oneshot goes well, I though about continuing it to a full campaign on events of EoSD incident) There is a good resource where I pull character stat blocks from https://sites.google.com/site/skardaestouhoudnd/home/character-statistics?authus... However, it wasn't updated for few years so it lacks hell of a lot characters.
Once again thanks for an amazing opportunity to get my friends into Touhou through DMing!
There is currently no discord server, though I might make one later, or enable itch.io’s forum feature, if there is demand.
Making subclass for Artificer is… Well, it’s a bit uncertain on copyright side, since Artificer isn’t a subclass in SRD. I may still make artificer subclasses, but likely separately.
Seija’s cheat items may be fun as magic items.
Touhou 6 characters are planned for 1.2, though I cannot give timeframe when I will finish it.
There may be some balancing issues with current version, so I am happy to get any feedback!
